SA Scouts Climate Change Annual Challenge 2011

Climate change is seriously affecting our planet and for the first time in a very long time S.A. Cubs, Scout and Rovers will combine their efforts to take part in a national themed annual challenge, aimed at creating more awareness around this subject.

 

 

The National Challenge will take the form of a fun programme specifically designed for the various age groups.

Cubs

1. Do any FOUR of the 5 individual requirements.

  1. Take part in an anti-litter campaign.
  2. Organise a “save it” campaign at home to encourage your family to conserve energy.
  3. Find out about an alien plant and why it is harmful to our environment and plant an indigenous tree/plant.
  4. Describe how you can harvest water in your community.
  5. Find examples of where the Outdoor Code has been broken and what has happened as a result of it.

2. Attend the climate change fun day in your Province/District.

3. Participate in two Pack programmes as set out in a booklet that will soon be available..

4. Find a long term green project in your community that is sustainable.

 

Scouts

1. Complete 5 of the 7 individual requirements.

  1. Explore the sources of clean water and clean air in your local environment.  Identify threats to clean water and air in the local and global environment and be able to suggest solutions.

  1. Name the potential environmental disasters in your local environment.  Design a simple disaster response plan and construct a poster detailing the plan to be put up on your community notice board.

(World Scout Environment Badge, requirement 7)

 

  1. Name a few causes of flooding and state some methods of flood control.

(World Conservation Interest Badge)

 

  1. Make a sketch illustrating the complete water cycle and describing the following terms: precipitation; run-off; groundwater; water table; evaporation; transpiration.

(Conservation Scoutcraft Badge, requirement 2)

 

  1. Do an energy audit. Do two of the following:
    1. Household waste audit
    2. Household using mainly electricity or Household using a mixture of fuels
    3. Estimating the Scout’s family household carbon emissions
    4. Conducting a mini audit of water use in the Scout’s home

 

  1. Make a compost heap at home of any other place where it would be used.

(Food for Life Silver section)

 

  1. Take part in JOTI/JOTA and connect with scouts in Germany to talk about Climate Change.

 

2. Attend the climate change fun day in the Province/District.

 

3. Participate in the 2 Troop meeting Programme as described in the booklet that will soon be available..

 

4. Participate in an environmental-based community project.

 

Rovers

  • Rovers to facilitate sessions at the day seminar

OR

Assist in the running of 2 pack or troop special climate change programmes (i.e. 2 pack programmes, 2 troop programmes or 1 pack and 1 troop programme)

OR

  • Volunteer at an NGO or other community organisation that contributes positively to climate change or environmental conservation for a minimum of 4 hours.

OR

Plan and execute a programme that contributes positively to climate change or environmental conservation for a minimum of 4 hours.
