The Governor’s Cup is a 1700 mile yacht race from Cape Town in South Africa, to James Bay on St. Helena Island and Scouts will be part of it!
Activities, functions and events will be organised in Simonstown, for the days preceding the start. The village will be a hive of activity and the public will get the opportunity to hear the SA Naval Band, catch up on the history of Simonstown, enjoy exploring the interesting shops and listen to the fascinating stories of Simonstown’s famous live mascot – the loyal dog “Just Nuisance”. All this will be available for onlookers to enjoy, while the yachts receive their final checks and make their last minute preparations.
There will be a parade of all the yacht crews at 10:00 on Saturday, 27 November which will culminate in the “mixing of the waters” ceremony – to which Cape Town Scouts have been invited to bring water from the Sea Scout Base at Zandvlei. Cape Town Cubs and Scouts are invited to come and join the festivities and support the Rotary Scout crew and cheer them on during the parade.
The breakdown of the crew is as follows – Chris Meier is from 2nd Plumstead Sea Scouts, Cameron Ehlers is ex 1st Blaauwberg Sea Scouts and Chloe Blyth is from the Rhodes Ranger Guides. Kyle Yon (ex 2nd Kenridge) and Curtis Peters from Jamestown Scout group in St Helena arrived last week to crew alongside our scouts on Rotary Scout.
This year’s race will be starting from False Bay Yacht Club in Simonstown on the 1st December 2010 and you are welcome to come along and wave them bon voyage.
