Alexandria Hiking Trail at Woody Cape Nature Reserve

This 25000ha reserve stretches from Sundays River Mouth to the Bushmans River. Dense Alexandria coastal forests is right next to the unique Alexandria Dunefield dune sea (one of the largest active coastal dunefields in the world). It's a trail filled with scenic beauty and contrasts. There is a wide variety of birds and wildlife and the variety of trees include indigenous yellowwoods. The reserve offers various day trails and grassy picnic site. Alexandria Hiking Trail is a circular trail starting at Langebos and is unique with its 3 ecosystems 1. high forest 2. desert-like dunes 3. magnificent beaches Visitors can watch for dolphins and whales from dune cliffs and can also see Bird Island. Birdlife includes the rare damara tern, jackass penguins, fish eagle and Knysna Loerie in the indigenous forest. Fauna includes bush pig, buck, monkeys and also butterflies. Base hut has 12 bunks at Woody Cape.
Van Stadens Wild Flower Reserve

This 500ha offers one huge "walkabout". About 35km from the centre of PE, this reserve has an incredible variety of indigenous flora.
Southern wooded slopes include the Afrotomane Forest with its Cape chestnuts, black ironwood, cabbage trees, yellowwoods and white pear. The large plateau has fynbos veld with proteas and pincushions. Ther is a bird sanctuary in the Reserve. The trail along the river banks is approximately 3km long. The forest walk is 2km. There are gravel roads for drives around the reserve and mountain biking trails for novices and families. There are picnic sites availabe for visitors.

The Sacramento Trial at the Skoenmakerskop - Sardinia Bay Nature Reserve offers postcard perfect seascapes and landscape. The 8km trail takes the visitor through dune vegetation and wild flowers. A bronze cannon at the start of the trail points towards the wreck site of the galleon "Sacramento", the Sacramento monument and the ruins of a mill once used to crush seashells.

The Maitland Nature Reserve is 127ha. It's about 30 km from the centre of PE via the Seaview Road to Maitland River Mouth. Visitors can walk through dense indigenous coastal forest alongside the famous giant Maitland sand dunes. Small animals include bushbuck and blue duiker. There is plenty of birdlife including loeries and sunbirds. An old wagon road leads tothe old Maitland lead mines. Three trails provide access into the dense forest. 1. Sir Peregrine Maitland Nature Trail - 3km, self-guided, follows the old wagon road 2. De Stades Nature Trail - 9km, fantastic view of St Francis Bay and the Maitland dunes 3. Igolomi Trial - 4km, winds through some of the most dense sections of the forest.
Island Nature Reserve and Bushbuck Hiking Trail

The 16km Bushbuck Hiking Trail and other walks can be found on the 480 ha Island Nature Reserve, just 25 km from the centre of PE via the Seaview Road turn off along the national road. Indigenous Alexandria coastal forest and a variety of tree species includes Outeniqua yellow-wood, white and hard pear as well as white milkwood. Fauna includes small blue duiker, bushpigs, bushbuck and vervet monkeys. There are over 50 species of birds including the Knysna Lourie. There are picnic and braai sites available for visitors.
Cape Recife Nature Reserve and Roseate Tern Hiking Trail

The Roseate Tern Hiking Trail is a 9 kilometre long circular walk in Port Elizabeth. It follows a coastal route , starting at the entrance of the 366ha Cape Recife Nature Reserve, off Marine Drive, Summerstrand, which is considered to be one of the best bird watching sites in South Africa. The trail takes its name from a scarce seabird called the Roseate Tern, which migrates through this area each Autumn and Spring.
The trail begins at the entrance to the Cape Recife Nature Reserve, where there is a large car park. It then follows the rocky coast passing several sandy beaches along its route as well as a 133 year old lighthouse, an old military post and a bird watching hide. The route is characterised by fynbos and scrub vegetation and several endangered plant species can be found here.
There is no charge to park in the car park at the entrance to the reserve but no vehicles are allowed beyond that point and the area can only be explored on foot.

The Otter Trail is probably the most popular hike in the country. Lush forests, rugged shorelines, mountain streams and waterfalls and fragrant fynbos make this an exceptional one. It is a rather strenuous hike with many ups and downs but an unforgettable one.
